This eye catching piece features the beautiful and tragic painting ‘Medusa’ painted by Caravaggio in 1597.

Medusa’s story is quite tragic as she wasn’t always the horrible creature she is depicted as now. She was once a beautiful maiden who was unjustly turned into something terrible. Medusa in Greek mythology was one of the gorgons. She had a mane of serpents for hair and supposedly was made to be so repulsive that whoever gazed on her was turned to stone. She was slain by the Greek hero Perseus, who was given a shield by the goddess Athena, so that he could avoid looking at her as he beheaded her. In Caravaggio’s painting, she is depicted at the moment of self recognition.

This piece is wrapped in oxidized copper or silver wires and polished to give it an aged appearance. It measures just under 2 inches from top to bottom and will come hung on a cord necklace.
